When I started sproutHR, I wanted to be very thoughtful about the heart of my business. I set out to discover and embrace my own Mission and Core Values that aligned with the vision I have for this business and how I want to serve my clients.
I’ve worked for companies before where the values are the driving factor in everything we did. And I’ve worked for other companies where there weren’t any values outlined at all (and if there were, they must have been hiding somewhere). The differences I’ve experienced between companies who lead by their values, and those who don’t, are remarkable. Today, I’d like to chat a bit about those differences and why it was so important to me to create this foundational piece of my business and share it with you.
The difference between companies who lead by their values, and those who don’t, is remarkable.
The companies who lead by their values use them to guide everyday decisions they make. It ensures that everyone on the team is aiming towards the same goals, which creates alignment. This kind of clarity helps the team focus on the most important tasks and ultimately leads to achieving big goals. And those goals are ferociously sought after and often exceeded in companies who lead by their values.
Companies who lead by their values ferociously seek and often exceed their goals.
The companies who don’t have a set of guiding principles (or who create them, but never look at them again), often feel adrift and lost in the sea of competing responsibilities and priorities. Goals are met, but not with the same level of enthusiasm and are rarely ever exceeded. The entire environment of the company has a totally different feel altogether.
Companies who don’t lead by their values lack enthusiasm and struggle meeting goals.
With these things in mind, I created Mission for how I want to serve my clients and make a difference. And dug deep to define the Core Values that will guide me (and my future team) with clarity and consistency.
The Mission Statement for sproutHR is:
Partner with + empower creatives to grow and lead their teams with confidence + heart.
I believe this statement really encompasses everything I want to bring to the creative world. To truly be a partner with creatives; to come alongside you and help you learn about this new phase of your business and your growing team. To empower you to make bold decisions while being strategic. And to help you reduce the stress, the overwhelm and the fear, so you can do it all with confidence and heart.
The Core Values for sproutHR are:
Diversity and inclusion are so important to me. Not just saying they’re important concepts, but truly living in these values each and every day. I believe in being mindful in everything I do, because without mindfulness comes exclusionary behaviors, even if they’re seemingly unintentional.
I believe in intentionally reaching out to connect with people who are different than me. Asking for opinions and feedback from people of various cultures and backgrounds. And actively being part of communities that support, encourage and value diversity and inclusion. Because where there are many who are different, there is a sea of creativity that truly makes the world beautiful and unique.
Lead with Heart
I believe in doing what’s right and in doing right by others. I think we’re all just trying to do our very best in life and could use a little grace at times. That’s why I fully believe in leading with heart in my business.
For me, leading with heart means having integrity by doing the right things, even when no one else in looking. Thinking about how what I’m doing can make an impact on others. Giving as often as I’m able to and sharing what I know, so others can be successful in their own endeavors. Making tough decisions because I know they’re the right decisions to make, even if I feel uncomfortable. And listening when others speak, because I know I’m not always right (even though I may think I am!) and being willing to admit when I’m wrong or need to correct something – having humility. All these and more, mean I’m leading with my heart each day I do business.
Make a Difference
This one is two-fold for me.
Make a Difference by doing good work that is helpful and impacts others’ businesses and lives in a positive way. As I mentioned before, I want to give and share my knowledge and skills with others, so they can be successful in growing their teams. I want to encourage, support and lift others up so they can feel empowered and confident in the decisions they’re making with hiring and training their teams, while developing their own leadership skills.
I also want to Make a Difference by giving back in the world. I have many passions and ways in which I give back, but they’re a bit all over the place right now to be honest. I’ve been involved in a variety of charitable organizations, but I’m excited to begin narrowing these down to make an even great impact in more focused areas. I can’t wait to share more about this vision and goal with you in the months to come!
I knew immediately that this value would make the list because it’s something I’ve really worked on all my life. My favorite quote, one that I look back at time and time again, through all phases of my life – whether personal or professional – is one by André Gide, and it goes:
Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose site of the shore.
This quote has carried me through scary decisions and tough times. It has reminded me that the world is out there waiting for me to discover it. If only I have the courage to step foot off the shore and chase my dreams.
I believe this quote resonates for sproutHR, too. I want to be courageous in my work with clients and in building this business. Not just for myself, but for those who I know will benefit from the knowledge and experience I have to share! (Click here to grab your free André Gide quote graphic – yay!!)
Ever since I can remember, I’ve always loved the fun, creative side of life. From acting, singing and dancing, to making people laugh – I truly enjoy living life. When I entered the workforce after college, people kept telling me, “Ashley, it’s going to be different in the ‘real world!’ To which I would respond, ‘Well, what world have I been living in until now?!’. They’d go on to say something like, “You’re not going to be able to be as carefree and it’s definitely not going to be fun.” Well, in typical Ashley fashion, I didn’t believe a word they said! And I stuck with my life-long philosophy, “If you’re not having fun, you’re not doing something right!”
Of course, we all have days when things get stressful, work is overwhelming or intense, or there are unpleasant things you have to manage through. Trust me, I’ve been in Leadership and HR positions for the past decade – I know tough days! But, I also know that we’re responsible for making the best of each and every day. That we have a choice to make it a great day or a miserable day.
I always had a hot pink monkey named Virginia hanging on my office door. She greeted each person as they entered, which led to many smiles and laughs throughout the years. And that’s why I’ll continue to cultivate an environment, a business and a life that’s full of song, dance, laughter and so much fun!
Cheers to creating a life and business full of song, dance, laughter and so much fun!
I truly hope this helps give you a better look into the heart behind sproutHR. Each time I make a decision in this business, each time I work with a client, each time I create a new service or product, each time I share information and each time I set a new goal, you can bet I’ll be referring back to my Mission Statement and Core Values. Because without a guiding point, we have no idea where we’re going.
Without a guiding point, we have no idea where we’re going.
